Pictorialism
In the late 19th century, photographs had become a highly reproducible and inexpensive medium, which led to scorn towards artistic photography. This was due to the perception that the taking and developing of pictures was far too common to have any creative or artistic value.
This perception was challenged when the pictorialist movement was started in 1885. This was a photographic movement dedicated to presenting photography as part of the artistic process, using the camera as a tool to capture the world before altering the image to give it artistic appeal. Artists of this movement were able to manipulate many things about the photographic process to achieve their desired effects; They would distort the lens by putting vaseline on it, apply photographic chemicals with brushes to give the look of brush strokes, or etch into a developed photograph to make it appear as if it was sketched.
Although it was what started the reestablishment of artistic photography, pictorialism was only part of the picture. The artistic principals of pictorialism found their way to many parts of the world, with many groups formed around its principles. One such group was the Photo-Secession, started by Alfred Stieglitz in 1902.
