Character recognition - Myra Greene
Myra Greene is an American photographer born in 1975. Her work explores identity, race, and the cultural divides between ethnicities. Her project on character recognition, which ran from 2006 to 2007, focuses on how other people perceive her based on her features. She uses laser-focused photography, as well as ambrotype printing, to show how judging a person by their features affects the way that person is perceived in the eyes of the judger.
The project began in the summer of 2005, shortly after Greene learned how to produce ambrotypes. She wanted to use the process to explore race and identity, but she wasn't sure how. Then, in late august, hurricane Katrina hit, a category 5 cyclone which caused over 1800 deaths and $125 billion in damages. In the wake of this tragedy, the newscasts and popular culture of the period in the aftermath would inspire and shape the creation of her next photographic project: Character recognition.

Discuss the series, Character Recognition, by Myra Greene. Your analysis should consider:
- The context for the work- does it relate to wider issues (eg. Hurricane Katrina, the slave trade)?
- What are Greene's intentions? Why this process, why the small scale etc.?
- The process- how does this support / contribute to the meaning behind the work?

Jasper
I tried to focus on the features of jasper's face here, as well as getting a good shadow. I only took one which showed a good enough shadow in the end. Still, I feel there were some with decent focus on the subject at least.

Darkroom
I didn't have a subject to take photos of other than myself, so I wound up taking selfies instead. A big disadvantage of this was the angle. However, I was able to try out different angles for lighting, and got a very good array of shadows.
Coloured lighting
The shots I took here were mostly automated. The colour was constantly being changed by sir, so there wasn't really a lot I could to to affect it. However, I do think I kept focus well enough to take some good pictures. Easily the biggest problem with them is the staging, I didn't really go for any different positioning or dynamic angles.

Lewis Khan - George Town
Georgetown from lewis khan on Vimeo.
George Town is a short documentary by Lewis Khan about his friend, George. It covers his life and past experiences from his perspective, using the mediums of film and photography to give the audience a small window into his life.
The film begins with a close up on George's mouth, as we see and hear him begin to talk about his life. As the monologue continues, we see the camera switch perspectives to various locations in George's room, from his wall, to his desk, to his notebooks, to his chests and so on. Each perspective shows new personal objects as he talks, like a football poster, a photograph, a stuffed pony, a stone bear carving, and so on.
Lewis Khan uses close up photography as well as portraits to give the viewer an intimate understanding of George's life. He does this by utilizing what George tells him to create supplementary footage. As George is monologuing, he is able to use close ups to give the viewer a distinct impression of what they are, as they are given the history and shape of each object to understand together. There are also points in the footage where the focus shifts to George. Some are close ups, but others are full portraits taken in clear, distinct locations. Khan uses these when George is focusing on his feelings rather than his experiences. He poses George for each of them, keeping them mostly static whereas the closeups have more movement. This allows the viewer to focus more on what george is saying, leaving the only visual information to be what George looks like.

Portraiture Interim Assessment
The quality of your photography is improving and it's good to see so many sets of observations on your weebly. You manage focus, exposure and composition well.(AO3) However, you must remember to add your best edits from each set. Don't forget to introduce each task (briefly) and comment on 'what went well' and 'even better if'.
Some playful experimentation with props and lighting. You appear to be gathering in confidence and are more prepared to explore different photographic tools.
Analysis of George Town is good, I was concerned you were going to describe the whole film but instead, you discuss intentions and technique. (AO1) You are missing the photographer links for the other tasks. Do not focus on this, simply add images by the relevant photographers. I do not want you to get distracted from the practical element by having to write about several artists.

Independent development - digital collage
For my independent project, I decided to do a collage, with myself as the subject. My main goal was to use my drawing skills and photographic experience to create a sufficient background for an expression of someone's identity, as well as apply techniques unique to the digital medium.
